This Is Where We Depart

⋯⋯

Work produced for the group exhibition Mobile Village: 2021 Yun-Chia-Chia-Ying Visual Art Link , at Yunlin Cultural Center

As a work that responds to the theme of the exhibition, Mobile Village, This is Where We Depart is a site-specific installation comprising a poem, drawings, photography, and books. The title refers to the divergence and convergence of lives, and the delays and synchronicity of human emotions. The work draws inspiration from my parents' stories of moving to my hometown, Huwei, a sugar-making town in central Taiwan, 40 years ago in pursuit of a better life. Using walking and traveling as a metaphor to life and life-long relationship, I create a poem written along the stair and walls of the exhibition venue. Words, symbols, and rhythms were delicately chosen and placed to embody the sense of moving and migration. Two books each containing the drawing diaries of my parents over a year were juxtaposed alongside the photography. Viewers were invited to sit down and flip through the pages, and also leave a note on their intimate ones after contemplation among the works.

Drawing, writing

Words and lines conspire in the memory

The afternoon drizzle falling on the garden

The steam rising from the cup

One desire to live in the scenery he portraits

Yet never escape from the inner delays

Endless goodbyes

Endless greetings

We verify and revise the contours of things

In the tunnel of sight lies a long silence and eternity
